The Don Bird Experiment

The Don Bird Experiment (DBX) came to Allusion Studios with a completed studio album and a clear vision for how it should sound. Jim Pavett delivered exactly what they asked for — then demonstrated what stem mastering could do instead.

Hearing the difference, DBX signed on immediately. The album was mastered at a level the band hadn’t expected was possible. A month later, they sent a live recording back for the same treatment.

What Is Stem Mastering?

Traditional mastering works from a single stereo mix. Stem mastering gives the engineer individual grouped elements — typically drums, bass, keys, horns, and so on — allowing precise control over the balance and dynamics of each component before the final master is assembled.

For jazz, where the interplay between instruments is everything, the difference is audible. Stem mastering preserves the space and dynamics of a live ensemble while bringing the clarity and punch a finished release demands.

The Result

A full studio album mastered beyond the band’s original expectations — followed by a live recording returned for the same process. That’s the clearest endorsement a studio can receive.
