A couple months ago, I got the opportunity to begin working on a project with Penn Weickhardt. Penn is a local Tucson singer/songwriter with an eloquent voice that complements the heartfelt music and lyrics he writes.
Penn’s longtime friend and producer Scott Dailey resides in New Jersey and has been flying out to Tucson every few weeks for the studio sessions. Scott is proficient on several instruments including guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, and vocals, and is able to come up with alluring melodies and chordal progressions at a moment’s notice. When it comes to arrangement and instrumentation, he can hear exactly what a song needs to make it more than just a filler track while keeping the original message and feel that Penn intended.
For this project, multi-instrumentalist Tommy Dominick has been coming in to lay down bass, mandolin, and organ tracks. Like Scott, Tommy has been in the business for a while and has the chops and musical knowledge to prove it. Tommy’s wife, Rachel Scott laid down the drum tracks for 5 out of the 6 songs on this album, and Jim Pavett played drums for the remaining song.
We are still in the tracking phase of things, but so far it has been a pleasure working with this group of musicians. Everyone is on the same page on where the album should go, so conflicting ideas on production decisions have not been an issue.
I am glad to be a part of this project and look forward to the upcoming sessions!
