Audio MASTERINg
Tucson & Remote
Allusion Studios masters singles, EPs, and albums for release on streaming platforms and CD. Local artists work in the room. Remote clients send files from anywhere. Every master is made by Jim Pavett himself — through real analog hardware, in a control room built for critical listening.
WHAT IS MASTERING?
Mastering is the final step before your music meets the world. It balances your tracks against each other, sets levels for streaming loudness standards, shapes the overall tone with equalization and compression, sets fades and spacing, and embeds ISRC codes for release. A good master makes an album sound like an album — cohesive, intentional, finished.
the signal chain
Most mastering today is a plugin chain on a laptop. Ours isn’t. Your music passes through real hardware:
- SPL Iron mastering compressor — a 120-volt vari-mu tube compressor that shapes dynamics without squeezing the life out of a record.
- SPL PQ mastering EQ — surgical when it needs to be, musical when it doesn’t.
- Lynx Aurora (n) converters — the cleanest possible path in and out of the analog domain, so nothing is lost on the way through.
Software follows presets. Hardware responds to what you actually put into it. The difference is audible, and it’s the reason your record leaves here sounding like a record instead of a file.
WHERE THE DECISIONS COME FROM
Gear is only half of it. The other half is knowing what to do with it.
Jim spent time at Gateway Mastering — Bob Ludwig’s facility, one of the most respected mastering houses in the world — sitting in with engineer Adam Ayan to learn how they work. Four decades into his own career, he was still in the room taking notes. That’s the standard your record gets held to.
Forty years of listening, and an Electrical Engineering degree that explains what those ears are hearing. No algorithm has either.
stem mastering
Traditional mastering works from a single stereo mix. Stem mastering gives Jim grouped elements — typically drums, bass, instruments, and vocals — allowing deeper control when a mix needs more than a stereo master can offer. It’s the right call for complex material, or for mixes with problems that can’t be solved at the stereo stage.
remote mastering
You don’t have to be in Tucson. Send your mixes by digital file transfer and receive finished masters without leaving your studio — same hardware, same ears, same room. Delivery by digital file transfer, CD, or DDP image for replication.
HOW WE ACTUALLY WORK
No packages. No promises we’d have to break.
Turnaround depends on the room. If the studio is free, your master can be done today. If we’re deep in another project, it might be two weeks. Call and ask — we’ll tell you where things actually stand.
Revisions aren’t rationed. Most studios sell three rounds and charge for the fourth. We don’t count. Want a test file before you commit? You get a test file. Want to hear it four different ways? We’ll do that too. You’re paying for time in the room — so the record gets finished when it’s right, not when the quota runs out.
One engineer, start to finish. Jim masters your record himself. Not an assistant. Not a subscription.
WHAT DOES IT COST?
Every project is different. A single, a ten-song album, and a stem-mastering job aren’t the same work — and they shouldn’t cost the same. Call 520-622-3895, tell us what you’re releasing, and we’ll tell you exactly what it takes.
FAQ
How should I prepare my mix for mastering?
Leave headroom — peaks around -6 dB, no limiter or heavy processing on the master bus. Send the highest-resolution files your session supports. When in doubt, send it as-is and ask. We’d rather answer a question than fix a squashed mix.
Can you master music recorded somewhere else?
Yes. Most of our mastering clients recorded and mixed elsewhere, including in home studios. Where it was made doesn’t matter. Where it’s finished does.
Do you master for streaming platforms?
Yes. Masters are delivered at appropriate loudness for Spotify, Apple Music, and other platforms, plus Red Book-compliant files and DDP images if you’re pressing CDs.
How long will it take?
As fast as the room is free — sometimes hours, sometimes two weeks. Call and we’ll tell you honestly.
What genres do you master?
All of them. Forty years covers a lot of ground — rock, jazz, classical, hip-hop, folk, electronic, and everything between. The gear doesn’t care about genre. Neither do we.
What’s the difference between mixing and mastering?
Mixing balances the elements within a song. Mastering balances the songs against each other and prepares the release for the world. We do both — but they’re separate crafts, done in separate sessions.
