Allusion Studios offers private, in-person audio instruction with Jim Pavett. Not a class. Not a curriculum. You come in with what you're trying to understand, and we work on that until you understand it.
WHO THIS IS FOR?
Over the years the people in that chair have been all kinds:
Someone in their twenties who wants to do this for a living and needs to actually learn the craft. A working musician who keeps hitting the same wall in their own recordings and can’t figure out why. A studio owner who just had a room built and needs to know how to run it. Someone who retired, finally has time, and always wanted to understand how sound works.
No prerequisites. No entry level. You get taught from wherever you actually are.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
Whatever you came to learn. If you have a specific problem, we solve it. If you want the whole picture, we build it from the ground up.
But given the choice, Jim teaches fundamentals — the physics of sound first, and the gear second. Most audio instruction has this backwards. It teaches you which knob to turn, so the moment you sit at a different console you’re lost again. Understand why the knob does what it does, and every room, every board, and every DAW makes sense. That knowledge doesn’t expire when the software updates.
Signal flow. Acoustics. Microphones and why they behave the way they do. Gain structure. What compression is actually doing. Mixing. The things that were true in 1985, are true now, and will still be true when whatever comes after today’s software arrives.
HOW IT WORKS
Sessions run in three-hour blocks, typically a few times a week — though that’s your call, not ours.
Put a deposit down and we go to work on what you need. There’s no wall to hit. No course to complete, no certificate at the end, no point where the material runs out. If you want to keep going deeper, we keep going deeper. Some people come once to solve one problem. Some keep coming for months.
Forty years of experience and hundreds of trained interns stand behind this. You’re not getting a syllabus someone else wrote. You’re getting the person who’s been doing the work.
PREFER TO LEARN ONLINE?
Jim also teaches The Studio Edge, an online audio course you can work through at your own pace, from anywhere. TheStudioEdge.com.
The in-person sessions and the online course cover different ground, and plenty of people do both — the course for the foundation, the studio for the things you can only learn with your hands on the gear and someone experienced sitting next to you.

FAQ
Do I need any experience to start?
No. Jim has taught complete beginners and working professionals in the same week. You get met where you are.
How long does it take to learn recording?
That’s up to you. Some people come in once with a specific problem and leave with it solved. Others train for months. There’s no finish line built into this — you go as far as you want to go.
Do you teach Pro Tools?
Yes — and any other DAW. But software isn’t really the point. My main systems are Cubase, Nuendo, and WaveLab, and I teach in Pro Tools, Logic, GarageBand, or whatever you’re actually working in. Tools change. The physics of sound doesn’t. Learn the fundamentals and you can pick up any DAW in a weekend.
Can you train me in my own studio?
Yes. Jim has designed and built studios for clients and then trained them to run the rooms he built. If you have a space, he can teach you how to use it.
What’s the difference between this and The Studio Edge?
The Studio Edge is Jim’s online course — structured, self-paced, learn from anywhere. In-person training is unstructured by design: you set the direction, and you get hands on real gear with an experienced engineer next to you.
